St. Maximin's Abbey
St. Maximin's Abbey, Benedictine monastery in Trier, Germany
St. Maximin is a former Benedictine monastery in Trier featuring a Gothic church with exceptional acoustics used for concerts. A detached stone gateway stands beside the church, while an extensive burial chamber runs beneath the site containing numerous stone sarcophagi.
The monastery was founded in the 4th century and later suffered severe destruction from raids and warfare. After these disasters, it was repeatedly rebuilt and remained an important center of religious life through the centuries.
The underground burial chamber reveals how believers venerated this sacred location across many generations and centuries. The sarcophagi in the vault tell the story of Christian tradition reaching back to the earliest days of the faith.
The church is now used as a concert hall and visitors should contact in advance to explore the burial chamber. Access to the underground areas is not always available, so a phone call before visiting is worthwhile.
The crypt chamber once sheltered the notable early church leader Athanasius, who sought refuge from persecution there. This historical connection made the location a center of early Christian resistance.
