Das Buddhistische Haus is a temple complex in Berlin consisting of a main building, meditation rooms, a library, and gardens. These different areas spread across multiple levels connected by stairs and platforms.
Dr. Paul Dahlke founded this Buddhist center between 1922 and 1924 as Europe's first Buddhist temple house. His vision created a space that brought Eastern teachings to Western audiences.
Resident monks from Sri Lanka conduct regular meditation sessions and teachings that introduce visitors to Theravada practice. You can experience this living tradition directly and participate in the daily activities.
The site is open daily for visitors to explore and attend meditation courses, with pathways that lead across various stairs and levels. Sturdy footwear is helpful since access to different areas involves changing elevations.
The entrance is marked by an elephant gate leading to eight ascending platforms, each representing one element of the Buddhist eightfold path. This thoughtful design blends architectural beauty with spiritual meaning.
