Kornelimünster Abbey, Benedictine monastery in Kornelimünster, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany
Located one kilometer from the original Imperial Abbey site, the current Kornelimünster Abbey stands as a spiritual center with dedicated spaces for prayer and reflection.
Founded in 801, the abbey received Imperial status in the mid-9th century and acquired the relic of Pope Cornelius' head in 875, leading to its current name.
The first American church service on German soil took place at the Abbey Church on September 22, 1944, led by Archbishop Francis Spellman of New York.
Eight monks maintain the abbey's guesthouse, offering retreat programs and accommodation for pilgrims traveling along the Way of St. James by prior arrangement.
The buildings of the former Imperial Abbey now function as a museum of modern art while maintaining their historical connection to Benedictine traditions.
