The Rhine-Main-Danube Canal extends for 171 kilometers through southern Germany, connecting the Main River with the Danube River through 16 locks.
The initial concept of connecting these rivers originated in 793 under Charlemagne, but the modern canal construction commenced in 1960 and finished in 1992.

Commercial vessels can transport up to 2,425 tons of cargo through the canal system, which includes locks measuring 190 meters long and 12 meters wide.
The canal reaches an elevation of 406 meters above sea level at its highest point, requiring specialized locks to manage significant water level changes.
