Weltenburg Abbey, Benedictine monastery and brewery in Kelheim, Germany
The Weltenburg Abbey stands on a peninsula along the Danube River, featuring white walls and two tall bell towers reaching toward the sky.
Founded in 601 by Scottish and Irish monks, this monastery represents the beginning of monastic tradition in Bavaria and includes a brewery established in 1050.
The abbey church contains extensive baroque decorations by the Asam brothers, with marble columns, painted ceilings, and gilded statues throughout the interior.
Visitors can reach the monastery by boat from Kelheim or by car, with guided tours available daily from April through October in German and English.
The monastery produces dark beer according to ancient recipes in what ranks among the oldest monastery breweries in the world.
