Weltenburger Enge, Protected canyon along the Danube River in Kelheim, Germany.

The Weltenburger Enge is a protected nature reserve along the Danube where limestone cliffs rise roughly 70 meters and form a narrow passage extending about 5.5 kilometers. This gorge cuts through the landscape with a width around 400 meters and shapes how the river appears in this section.

The area formed 150 million years ago when a subtropical sea built massive reef structures before the river gradually carved this passage over countless centuries. The Danube shaped the current rock walls incrementally, creating the gorge that exists today.

The gorge's name comes from the narrow passage where the river squeezes through, and it holds meaning for visitors seeking direct encounters with natural forces. For many locals, this stretch of river represents a place where the landscape's power becomes tangible.

The best way to explore the gorge is by boat tours that depart regularly from Kelheim, allowing views of the rock walls from different angles. Hikers can also use paths along the banks to experience the landscape from the shore.

Eurasian Eagle-Owls and Peregrine Falcons nest in the rock crevices, finding shelter here across generations. Rare plants like Diptam also grow on the limestone walls, making the area botanically distinct.
