Alte Oberfinanzdirektion Hamburg, Cultural heritage monument in Hamburg-Altstadt, Germany
The Alte Oberfinanzdirektion Hamburg is an administrative building in the Altstadt district with red brick walls and sandstone ornamentation, featuring a convex main facade and varied mansard rooflines. The structure rises four stories with generous ceiling heights and encloses a triangular courtyard topped with a glass roof.
The building rose between 1907 and 1910 on the site of the former Heiligengeisthospital and served as the headquarters of Hamburg's financial authority for more than a century. Its administrative role ended in 2009, marking a transition to new uses.
The interior features Neo-Baroque decorative elements, particularly in an oval meeting room and a two-story entrance hall that reflect the formal character of early 20th-century administrative design. These spaces convey the style and purpose of their original function.
The building sits centrally at Rödingsmarkt 2 and is easily accessible from downtown Hamburg. Access for visitors is typically available when events or cultural activities take place in the courtyard or interior spaces.
The courtyard features a glass-roofed library space that now serves as a venue for gatherings and cultural events, adding a contemporary purpose to the original administrative structure. This light-filled interior courtyard becomes an unexpected social gathering place within the historic red-brick setting.
