Marktoberdorf, District capital in Ostallgäu, Germany.
Marktoberdorf is a district capital in Ostallgäu, Bavaria, spreading across hilly terrain with elevations between 727 and 790 meters. The built-up area alternates between residential neighborhoods, commercial zones, and agricultural land on the outskirts.
The district office called Bezirksamt Oberdorf was founded in 1862 and carried that name before being renamed later. The status as a major district town came in 1972 when the administrative structure in Bavaria was reorganized.
The International Chamber Choir Competition returns to Marktoberdorf every two years, turning the town into a meeting point for singers from around the world. During those days, you hear music in different languages and styles in the streets and churches that rarely come together elsewhere.
Regional roads connect the town with surrounding areas, with Kaufbeuren about 11 kilometers away offering additional services. For sightseeing, it helps to walk through the center where most public buildings and shops are located.
Since 1970, Marktoberdorf has hosted an international summer school for computer scientists organized by NATO and the Technical University of Munich. Every year, specialists from many countries gather to discuss current research topics.
