Wacken is a municipality in Steinburg district in Schleswig-Holstein, about 70 kilometers northwest of Hamburg. The settlement spreads across flat countryside with fields and scattered farmsteads arranged along a few roads.
The village appears in records since the 12th century when it was part of the County of Holstein. Farming shaped life here for centuries until the 1990s when the music festival began and made the place known far beyond the region.

The village is easy to reach by car on country roads, while public buses run mainly on weekdays. Parking is possible in the center, though special rules apply during the summer festival.
All residents of the municipality receive free entry to the festival, which strengthens the connection between inhabitants and the annual event. Many take advantage of this offer even if they do not regularly attend concerts.
