Marburg Castle

Marburg Castle rises on Schlossberg hill in the city of Marburg, featuring fortifications and stone walls that display Gothic and Renaissance architectural styles. The buildings spread across the hillside, creating different courtyards and rooms that reflect various periods in construction and design.

The castle was founded in the 11th century and became the first seat of the Landgraviate of Hesse within the Holy Roman Empire. This importance helped it survive and develop over the following centuries.

The castle houses the Cultural History Museum of Marburg University, displaying exhibitions about the region's past in the Wilhelmsbau section. These collections show how the area developed over time and what role this place played in local life.

Access to the castle is possible via the hill, which is easily reachable on foot, especially from the city center. The best time to visit is during daytime, when there is enough light to enjoy the rooms and views.

In 1529, the Marburg Colloquy took place here, a crucial meeting between Martin Luther and other Protestant reformers during the Reformation. This event made the castle an important location in European religious history.
