Schloss Johannisberg, Wine estate in Rheingau, Germany.
Schloss Johannisberg is a Baroque palace on a hilltop in Rheingau surrounded by about 35 hectares of vineyards with stony soils. The estate houses historic wine cellars, a basilica, and a restaurant that visitors can explore.
The vineyard was founded in 817 and developed over centuries under Benedictine monks. In 1720, the estate became the world's first winery to focus exclusively on Riesling wines under Konstantin von Buttlar.
The basilica on the estate, originally built for the Benedictine monastery, hosts regular concerts and performances by the Rheingau Music Festival. Visitors can experience the acoustics of this historic space during musical events held throughout the year.
Visitors can book guided tours through the vineyards and historic cellars and taste wines at the tasting room. The Schlossschänke restaurant on the grounds offers meals daily, making it easy to arrange food and drink during your visit.
Beneath the palace lies the Bibliotheca Subterranea, an underground collection holding around 25,000 bottles of wine, some dating back to 1748. This collection ranks among the oldest documented wine archives in Germany and provides rare insights into winemaking from earlier centuries.
