Bayernpark Feriendorf Grafenau, Holiday village complex in Grafenau, Germany
Bayernpark Feriendorf Grafenau is a holiday village complex located on a hillside near Grafenau, Germany, consisting of individual homes spread across several hectares. The accommodations are arranged around a central area that includes communal facilities and activity spaces.
The site opened in 1964 as an initiative to support families from West Berlin who needed recreational spaces outside the city. It represented an early effort to provide affordable holiday options to a specific population during the post-war period.
The site served as a gathering place where families from different regions met and celebrated together over many decades. The cozy arrangement of homes on the hillside naturally encouraged a sense of community among guests.
The complex is best explored on foot since homes are spread across different levels of the hillside with connecting paths between them. Comfortable walking shoes are helpful since the terrain slopes gently and the layout takes time to fully see.
The complex was among the first in Germany to offer organized childcare programs sorted by age group, making it especially valuable for working parents. This model was innovative for its time and was later adopted by other holiday village projects.
