Reisach Priory, Carmelite monastery in Oberaudorf, Germany.
Reisach Priory is a Carmelite monastery complex in Oberaudorf with a church dedicated to Saint Teresa, monastic buildings, and surrounding gardens located at Klosterweg. The grounds contain multiple structures that supported religious community life and compose a coherent architectural ensemble within the Bavarian countryside.
The monastery was established in 1747 by Johann Georg von Messerer and his wife, serving as a religious community for more than 270 years. In 2019, the last Discalced Carmelite monks departed, bringing an end to centuries of continuous monastic practice at the site.
The church interior features wooden relief carvings on the side altars, including notable sculptures by Johann Baptist Straub, and displays an 18th-century Baroque nativity scene. These artworks shape the visual character of the sacred space and reflect the craftsmanship invested in the decoration.
The monastery grounds are accessible from Klosterweg in Oberaudorf with entry through the main gate to explore the exterior and gardens. Visit during daylight hours in dry weather to fully appreciate the layout and architectural features of the complex.
The empty buildings served as a filming location for the German crime series Tatort in 2021, appearing in the episode 'Wunder gibt es immer wieder'. The vacant complex provided filmmakers with an authentic backdrop for dramatic scenes without need for set modifications.
