Hornberg Castle

Hornberg Castle is a fortress perched above the Neckar Valley, built around defensive walls, a tower, and interconnected residential buildings. The layout demonstrates typical medieval defensive design with narrow passages and compact chambers integrated into the fortifications.

The castle was founded in the 11th century and became associated with the knight Götz von Berlichingen, who made it his home. It remained an inhabited stronghold through the centuries until its transformation into a heritage destination in recent times.

The name comes from the rocky outcrop on which it was built, and it remains a defining landmark in the Neckar Valley. Visitors experience how medieval living spaces and defensive structures were merged into one functional compound.

The site opens daily from April through October, with tours conducted in German and English. Expect uneven ground and steep stairs throughout, as the medieval construction features narrow spaces and tight access routes.

The castle has operated as a hotel and restaurant for decades, allowing guests to sleep inside medieval chambers. This uncommon combination allows visitors to experience overnight stays within authentic historical fortification walls.
