Wasserturm Elmshorn, Water tower in Elmshorn, Germany.
Wasserturm Elmshorn is a roughly 45-meter-tall brick structure featuring Renaissance Revival elements with carefully crafted facade details and symmetrical window patterns across its height. The building now houses a candle-making workshop where visitors can create their own candles and access a small bistro within the same space.
Built in 1902, it served as a crucial part of the municipal water distribution system until 1989. The structure represents the infrastructure development that supported Elmshorn's growth during the early industrial period.
The tower remains a landmark that shows how the city values its industrial past and transforms old structures into living spaces. Visitors passing through can see how the building connects the neighborhood to its heritage through everyday use.
The site is located at Jahnstraße 1 and easily accessible with clear directions from the city center. Visitors should plan their visit during operational hours if they want to participate in candle-making activities or use the bistro, as space inside is limited.
In an unusual transaction in 2003, the retired tower was sold for just a few cents and then transformed. This unlikely second life turned it into a memorable example of creative urban repurposing that many visitors find surprising.
