Perfstausee is a flood retention basin located between Breidenbach and Breidenstein that covers 18 hectares during flood conditions and normally holds a water surface of 13 hectares. The facility includes dam structures and control systems that manage water flow.
Construction began in 1984 following severe February floods, and the facility opened on September 18, 1993. The project emerged from flooding events that demonstrated the need for a retention system.
The lake sits within a protected nature zone where visitors can watch water birds from marked observation areas. Bird watching draws people here throughout the year.
The location offers water activities such as kayaking and paddleboarding with automated rental services and a renovated boat dock. Visitors should know that watercraft are available on-site and the infrastructure supports various activity levels.
The water body has been the subject of regular quality monitoring and improvement efforts that show its evolution as both a recreational and natural space. This systematic attention has allowed it to serve both its protective function and its role as a place for leisure.
