Burg Aschersleben

Burg Aschersleben is a medieval castle situated on Wolfsberg hill, with surviving sections of defensive walls and a substantial tower still standing. The site now occupies grounds within the Aschersleben Zoo, where the historic structures form part of the visitor landscape.

The castle was built between 1000 and 1100 as a defensive stronghold and underwent reconstruction in the mid-1400s. Large portions of walls were dismantled in the 1800s, fundamentally altering the fort's appearance and function.

The castle is now woven into the zoo experience, where visitors encounter the old structure amid animal enclosures. The tower serves as an owl house today, showing how medieval architecture shares space with contemporary wildlife care.

Access to the castle is available through the zoo grounds, making it an interesting add-on to a zoo visit. The historic tower is visible from multiple vantage points and paths throughout the zoo area, allowing exploration at your own pace.

The tower now houses a functioning owl enclosure, repurposing a medieval defensive structure for modern wildlife care. A permanent exhibition in the animal keeper's residence documents how the fort evolved from military stronghold to zoological site.
