Burg Krautheim, Medieval castle in Krautheim, Germany
Burg Krautheim is a medieval castle ruin set on a rocky outcrop above the town of Krautheim in northern Baden-Württemberg. Its remaining walls and towers rise above the Jagst river valley and can be seen clearly from the town below.
The castle was built in the High Middle Ages and came under the shared rule of the Würzburg and Mainz dioceses during the 14th century. This division led to prolonged disputes over control of the surrounding territory.
The castle functioned as the administrative hub of local rule for centuries and shaped how residents understood power and authority in their region. Today it still reflects the medieval structure that organized daily life and relationships in the surrounding area.
The ruin is within walking distance from the town center and can be reached by marked footpaths. It is worth checking access conditions before visiting, as entry may depend on the season or ongoing work at the site.
The knight Götz von Berlichingen directed a famous insult toward the lord of this castle in the early 16th century, a remark later immortalized by Goethe in his play of the same name. That single phrase became one of the most quoted lines in German literature.
