Burg, Medieval castle ruins in Königsberg, Germany.
Burg is a medieval castle ruin sitting on a 355-meter (1,165-foot) high hill that overlooks the historic old town, with stone walls connecting down to Saint Josef Church. The grounds today form an open area with a restaurant, parking facilities, and pathways through visible foundation walls and defensive structures.
This fortress was built after nearby Bramberg Castle fell to destruction in 1168, serving as an imperial stronghold under Emperor Frederick II until 1243. After this period, it gradually lost its military importance.
The castle grounds serve as a meeting point where locals and visitors gather for events and enjoy sweeping views of the town below. The site hosts regular performances, festivals, and celebrations that are woven into the rhythm of community life.
The grounds are open year-round and invite walks through the ruins at your own pace. Wear sturdy shoes since the path up the hill is steep and the terrain is uneven in places.
An 8-meter-deep lined moat still runs along the eastern side, revealing how carefully the fortress was once defended. Such well-preserved defensive details are uncommon to find in this region today.
