Landskron, Medieval castle in Oppenheim, Germany.

Burg Landskron is the ruin of a hilltop castle above Oppenheim, built of rough grey-brown stone. Its roofless walls stand in a broken, jagged line, pierced by rows of small dark windows and two taller pale stone frames high on the right. Two short square raised sections rise above the wall tops, and a large arched opening and a small dark doorway sit in the lower wall. It stands behind a grassy slope and a vineyard.

The fortress was built in medieval times to control and defend the Oppenheim region. Over centuries it was rebuilt and modified to serve different purposes and changing needs.

The name Landskron dates from 1668, after the Thirty Years' War; before that the site was called Reichsburg Oppenheim. Each year in the first half of May the town holds a medieval market and Spectaculum in the ruins. The castle also serves as an open-air stage for Oppenheim's theatre festival and summer concerts.

The ruin stands on the hill above Oppenheim and is the start and end point of a wine trail; a marked path leads up from the town. A viewing platform was built in 1875 on the stump of the destroyed bergfried. From there the view reaches the Melibokus, Worms Cathedral, the BASF works at Ludwigshafen and the Mannheim telecommunications tower; with binoculars the Hornisgrinde in the Black Forest, 140 km away, can be seen.

The castle well, dug in the 13th century, is almost 40 metres deep and still holds a water column of about 2.5 metres, now raised by an electric submersible pump. From the viewing platform built in 1875 on the stump of the blown-up bergfried, a telescope reveals the Hornisgrinde in the Black Forest, 140 kilometres away.
