Welschbillig Castle, Medieval castle ruins in Welschbillig, Germany.

Welschbillig Castle is a medieval fortress ruin with a rectangular layout surrounded by moats and featuring two round towers at the gateway. A stone bridge crosses the water defenses and connects the outer fortifications to the interior of the complex.

The castle was built around 1140 on the site of a Roman villa and was significantly fortified between 1242 and 1299. Destruction by French forces at the end of the 17th century left it in the ruined state seen today.

The gatehouse displays two round towers typical of medieval defensive design from this era. Visitors can observe these architectural features and understand the building methods of that period.

The castle ruins are located at Burgstrasse 154 in Welschbillig and are accessible throughout the year. Visitors can contact the local area for any questions about visiting.

Beneath the current ruins lie remains of a Roman residence that existed long before the medieval castle. These layers reveal how the land was used for settlements across many centuries.
