Burg Wernberg

Burg Wernberg is a medieval castle in Wernberg-Köblitz featuring a distinctive triangular courtyard layout and a deep moat that encircles the entire fortification. The stronghold displays heavy stone walls and a compact defensive design characteristic of medieval military architecture.

The fortress was first documented in 1280 and originally belonged to the lords of Leuchtenberg before passing to the Paulsdorf family through a purchase agreement. These ownership changes shaped the early development of the castle within the region.

The castle chapel, consecrated to St. George in 1401, represents the religious architecture integration within medieval defensive structures.

The castle sits on elevated ground and can be viewed from outside throughout the year, allowing visitors to explore the outer structure and castle grounds. Interior access is currently limited due to the site's use as a medical facility.

The castle underwent a remarkable transformation, shifting from medieval military stronghold to luxury hotel before becoming a specialized clinic for psychosomatic medicine today. This unusual trajectory demonstrates how historic structures adapt to changing societal needs.
