Castle Zelem, Medieval castle in Mehr village, Germany
Castle Zelem is a stone fortress located between Kranenburg and Kleve, distinguished by two corner towers and a Renaissance portal. The structure sits at the edge of the Lower Rhine landscape and displays heraldic ornamentation on its main facade.
The castle first appeared in written records during the 12th century as property of Echternach Abbey. In 1348, ownership passed from the Counts of Kranenburg to the lords of Groesbeek.
The Renaissance portal displays the Palant family coat of arms from 1464, adorned with sandstone carvings of mythical creatures and human faces. These ornamental details reflect the artistic taste of the castle's owners and remain visible on the exterior today.
The castle remains privately owned, so visitors can only view it from the outside and admire its architectural features from the exterior. The building is visible from public areas, but access to the interior is not permitted.
Inside the main wing are a barrel-vaulted basement, a tower room with a star vault, and an original Renaissance fireplace that remain hidden from outside view. These interior features reveal the craftsmanship that defined the medieval and early modern periods at this location.
