Castrum Burginatium, Roman military fort in Kalkar, Germany.
Castrum Burginatium is a Roman military fort in Kalkar with preserved foundations, ditches, and gateway structures that show the classic square layout of a Roman fort. The remains spread across several hectares and allow visitors to understand how the space was organized between administrative buildings, storage areas, and residential quarters.
The fort was built around 90 CE at the border of the Roman Empire in Germania and played an important role in securing this frontier. It was abandoned about 160 years later when Roman military priorities shifted in the region.
The name comes from the Roman military installation built here along the Rhine. Visitors can see how soldiers lived through the remains of barracks and workshops that reflect everyday life in the fort.
The site is open year-round but the best time to visit is from April through October when weather is more favorable. An information center on site offers explanatory panels and can provide maps to help you understand the sprawling grounds.
One of the most interesting discoveries at this site are the remains of bathing facilities, showing that soldiers enjoyed comfort here. These well-preserved bath structures are rare evidence of daily life in a Roman frontier post.
