Burg Nieder-Modau, Medieval castle ruins in Nieder-Modau, Germany.
Burg Nieder-Modau is a castle ruin situated on a cone-shaped hill in the village of Nieder-Modau. The site features remnants of an elliptical ring wall and a deep moat that once surrounded the fortress.
The fortress was founded around 1200 by the Lords of Crumbach, becoming an important local stronghold. It was destroyed between 1379 and 1382 during regional conflicts and never rebuilt after that.
The ruins sit within farmland today, surrounded by pastures and fields that shape the visitor's approach to the site. Walking around the remains, one can trace the outline of what was once a fortified stronghold on the hilltop.
Access to the ruins is via a field path from the village, which can become muddy in wet weather. There are no marked paths or steps on site, so sturdy footwear and care on uneven ground are recommended.
Archaeological excavations have uncovered arrowheads, spearheads, and animal bones that reveal how people lived inside the fortress. These finds show traces of hunting and livestock raising that sustained the inhabitants.
