Burg Oberstaad, Medieval castle in Öhningen, Germany
Burg Oberstaad is a medieval castle in Öhningen on the Höri peninsula overlooking Lake Constance. The rectangular residential tower with its pitched roof dominates the structure and currently serves as the home of an institute that uses the spaces for offices and seminar rooms.
The castle was built around 1200 by the Lords of Hohenklingen and served as a family residence for generations. Throughout the centuries it underwent several rebuildings, with a fire in 1886 marking a major turning point in its fate.
The building combines Romanesque and Gothic features that reveal its medieval origins. Visitors can see this blend of styles in the stonework and window shapes.
The building is now in active use as a workplace and regular public tours are not available. Visitors can explore the architecture and location from the outside and enjoy the surroundings of the peninsula.
After a devastating fire in 1886 the castle was transformed into a textile factory, beginning an entirely new chapter in its life. This industrial use shaped the building for several decades before it was restored in the 1970s.
