Burg Parkstein

Burg Parkstein is a castle ruin perched on a basalt mountain near Parkstein with views across the Upper Palatinate landscape. The remaining stone walls are built directly on natural rock formations, demonstrating how medieval builders adapted their structures to the hillside.

This fortress was built in medieval times to monitor trade routes passing through the region and secure local control. It gradually declined over centuries and eventually became the ruin visible today, with basalt walls that have endured through time.

The ruins show how communities once gathered here and understood this hilltop as their center of power and protection. Walking through the remains, you sense the importance this place held for people living in the surrounding valleys below.

The site is accessible via marked hiking trails from Parkstein town center, with information panels on-site explaining the ruins and their layout. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the paths to the hilltop are steep and uneven ground requires careful footing.

Medieval builders integrated natural basalt columns directly into the fortress walls as structural elements. This volcanic stone provided exceptional strength and has helped the remains survive for centuries with minimal deterioration.
