Burgtreswitz, Castle heritage site in Moosbach, Germany
Burgtreswitz is a medieval fortress at 505 meters (1,660 feet) elevation in the Upper Palatinate region, displaying traditional stone defensive structures and Bavarian architectural features. The site includes several buildings housing a museum, hunting and fishing exhibitions, and an information center about the Northern Upper Palatinate Forest Nature Park.
The fortress was first documented in 1218 under Knight Pernoldus von Draeswitz and passed to Wittelsbach rule in 1272. It suffered major damage during the Thirty Years' War but was later restored to serve as a cultural site.
The fortress served as the seat of local authority for centuries and continues to shape the character of Moosbach. Visitors can see in the walls and towers how this past power influenced the community and its surroundings for generations.
The site is accessible on foot with walking paths through the surrounding Upper Palatinate landscape. Visit during dry weather for the best experience, as stone pathways can become slippery when wet.
Since 1985, local volunteers have dedicated countless hours of unpaid work to preserve the medieval structure, restoring it piece by piece. This commitment is visible today in the carefully renovated rooms and structures that visitors can explore.
