Coburger Kasernen, Military barracks in Coburg, Germany.
Coburger Kasernen is a military compound in Coburg, Bavaria, made up of several buildings from different construction periods. The grounds include housing blocks and administrative structures, some of which have been repurposed for civilian use.
The site dates back to the mid-19th century, when the first military units were stationed here. It grew considerably in the 1930s, then passed into American hands after 1945 and remained so until German reunification in 1990.
The barracks are closely tied to the memory of the American military presence in Coburg, which lasted for several decades after World War II. Many local residents still recall the daily contact between the townspeople and the US soldiers stationed there.
The site is best visited during the day, when accessible areas are easy to see and walk around. Some parts of the compound may be off-limits, so it is worth checking access conditions before heading there.
Coburg sat right on the former inner-German border during the Cold War, which gave the compound a specific role in border surveillance. When that border disappeared in 1990, the site's military function became redundant almost overnight.
