Eberstadt Stalactite Cave, Show cave in Eberstadt quarry, Germany.
Eberstadt Stalactite Cave is a limestone cave running through a quarry site, extending roughly 600 meters through rock layers from the Middle Triassic period. The underground path winds through natural passages lined with limestone walls and displays glittering calcite crystal formations throughout.
Workers accidentally discovered the cave system in December 1971 while operating the quarry, which led to its rapid protection. It opened to the public as a natural monument in 1973.
The cave serves as a learning space within the Geo-Nature Park Bergstraße-Odenwald, where visitors discover how rock formations develop over time. Guided underground tours reveal the natural processes that shaped this landscape.
Access starts from the parking area and continues on wheelchair-accessible paths all the way to the cave's end. The temperature stays steady around 11 degrees Celsius year-round, so warm clothing is a good idea.
The walls keep their original white limestone color because the cave was protected from soot and staining caused by historical torch and candle use. This sets it apart from many other caves where open flames darkened the ceilings and walls to dark gray tones.
