Michaelskapelle, Baroque pilgrimage church in Untergrombach, Germany.
The Michaelskapelle is a Baroque church building located on Michaelsberg in the Untergrombach area of Baden-Wurttemberg. The structure sits at about 272 meters elevation and offers views across the Rhine Valley and surrounding landscapes from this vantage point.
The chapel was built between 1742 and 1744 under the patronage of Prince-Bishop Damian Hugo von Schönborn. It replaced an earlier Gothic structure that had stood at this location for about 270 years before.
The chapel is named after the Archangel Michael and displays elaborate Baroque religious furnishings inside with altars and sacred figures. Visitors can observe these artistic details today, which reflect the religious devotion of the period.
The chapel is accessible throughout the year and welcomes visitors during worship times and for personal exploration. Access is via a footpath that climbs from the village of Untergrombach up to Michaelsberg.
In the early 1800s, the building briefly served as a barn, pigsty, smithy, and bakery before returning to religious use. This unusual phase shows how the chapel reflected the practical needs of the local community.
