Schloss, Heritage castle in Ahorn, Germany.
Schloss Ahorn is a castle in Ahorn, Bavaria, built with four sides, two round corner towers, and a steep pitched roof. A central courtyard of several hundred square meters forms the core of the structure, with rooms arranged around this open space.
The castle was first mentioned in 1075 as Burg Ahorny and was destroyed in 1525 during the Peasants' War. Joachim von Rosenau rebuilt it in 1555, establishing the form that survives to this day.
The castle's staircase features an ornate portal from 1621 that reflects how German nobility expressed their wealth and status through architectural details. These elaborate entryways were ways for families to demonstrate their importance and refined taste to visitors.
The castle remains in private hands of the von Erffa family and can only be visited by advance arrangement. Visitors should contact ahead to arrange a suitable time for a tour.
The walls bear traces from different eras: the 1555 structure is visible, the 1621 portal stands ornately in the staircase, and modifications from 1876 appear in various rooms. These layers tell the story of rebuilding and adaptation across three centuries.
