Rader Hochbrücke

The Rader Hochbrücke is a steel bridge that spans the Nord-Ostsee-Kanal near Borgstedt, connecting both sides of the waterway. It has four standard traffic lanes plus two emergency lanes and rises approximately 50 meters above water level.

The bridge was completed in 1972 as part of efforts to modernize Germany's transportation network. Its steel structure represented a significant engineering solution for crossing the busy canal at that time.

The bridge design reflects German engineering principles of the 1970s with its narrow main girders supported by double piers across the Kiel Canal.

When crossing the bridge, be aware of varying speed restrictions that result from previous inspections and maintenance work. Different vehicle types have different speed limits, so watch for signage indicating requirements for cars and trucks.

The bridge has a gentle curve that spans over 12 kilometers in radius, barely noticeable to travelers crossing it. Additionally, dedicated cycling paths allow bicyclists to cross the canal using this same route.
