Fernmeldeturm Calau, Communication tower in Calau, Brandenburg, Germany.
The Fernmeldeturm Calau is a 184-meter concrete structure that rises above the town and transmits television and radio signals across the region. The facility is operated by Deutsche Funkturm and serves southern Brandenburg with digital radio and television broadcasting.
The concrete structure was completed in April 1987 and replaced a 90-meter lattice mast from 1958. The facility was built in the final years before German reunification and marks a key phase of infrastructure development in East Germany.
The tower represents technological developments in East German broadcasting infrastructure and follows architectural patterns that became common in the region. Its design exemplifies communication solutions that emerged in the second half of the 20th century.
The facility is located at coordinates 51.741873°N 13.9419887°E and is accessible from outside for photographers and those interested in technology. Visitors should note that the tower is best viewed from ground level, as public access to its interior is not available.
A fire in 2011 at approximately 120 meters height damaged the facility significantly and forced a temporary switch to smaller regional transmitters. The restoration took until 2012 and revealed both the vulnerability of such infrastructure and its importance for regional media coverage.
