Flintbeker Eibe, Ancient yew tree in Flintbek, Germany.
Flintbek Yew is a massively grown yew tree standing beside Flintbek Church in the village with a trunk diameter of about 1.20 meters. The stem appears dark and gnarled, reaching about 11 meters in height with a circumference of about 3.80 meters.
This tree was already present when Flintbek Church was built in 1223, meaning it is between 800 and 1000 years old. It has witnessed several epochs of village life and stands as one of the oldest known landmarks in the region.
The tree stands beside Flintbek Church and has shaped the village square for centuries. Locals and visitors use the space beneath its branches as a gathering place and quiet spot.
The tree sits about 70 meters north of Flintbek Church in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district of Schleswig-Holstein. You can reach the village easily by car or bicycle and have a clear view of the tree from the church square.
In October 2019, this tree received the status of a National Heritage Tree, making it the third tree in Germany with this designation. This recognition highlights its importance as a historical landmark and shows how communities protect ancient trees.
