Freizeitstätte Wittringen

Freizeitstätte Wittringen is a large recreational area comprising woodlands, ponds, and open parkland with multiple facilities spread across the grounds. A water castle stands as a landmark, and a circuit path winds through the landscape for walking and running.

Gladbeck purchased the Wittringer Forest in 1922 and converted the swampy terrain into a public leisure facility opening in 1928. This transformation addressed environmental challenges stemming from the region's mining past.

The water features and green spaces shape how visitors experience daily recreation, whether walking, jogging, or spending time with family in a natural setting. The place has become a refuge for local residents seeking escape from urban life.

The grounds offer diverse activities such as tennis, archery, mini-golf, and boat rentals on the castle pond, with a children's adventure playground available. The entire area is well laid out with clear paths and quiet zones, making it accessible for different visitor preferences.

The park was deliberately designed as a solution to drainage problems caused by ground subsidence from mining activities in the region. The interconnected pond system serves both recreational and essential technical purposes.
