Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology, Research institute in Bernsdorf, Germany.
The Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology is a research facility in Bernsdorf dedicated to production engineering and manufacturing technologies. The organization operates multiple laboratory locations across Germany to help companies develop and improve their manufacturing processes.
The institute was founded in 1991 during Germany's reunification period as part of efforts to strengthen industrial research in eastern regions. Its creation reflected the broader goal of building research capacity across the newly unified country.
The institute maintains strong connections with local universities and industries, fostering knowledge exchange between academic research and practical manufacturing applications.
The institute offers companies access to testing facilities, technical guidance, and prototype development for their manufacturing processes. Visitors should know that advance registration is required since this is a research facility with limited public access.
The institute's Reference Factory H2 combines physical manufacturing plants with digital twin technology to research hydrogen components. This project demonstrates how traditional factory work integrates with modern digital systems to develop new materials.
