Freilichtmuseum Beuren

Freilichtmuseum Beuren is a large collection of 22 historical buildings from the Swabian Alb region, including barns, mills, and workshops. The structures date from the 15th century onward and demonstrate how people in this region lived and worked.

The museum was founded in 1995 to collect and preserve rural buildings before they disappeared. Most of the buildings date from medieval times onward and document life in the region between the Middle Neckar and the Swabian Alb.

The preserved workshops show traditional craftwork such as carpentry, farming, and food preparation methods that reflect daily life in earlier times. These active demonstrations reveal how people once built their homes and produced their own food.

The site is good for walking and offers enough space to explore all buildings in one day. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and allow plenty of time, as there is much to see.

The museum houses a historical snail garden and an old photo laboratory, offering rare insights into specialized practices of rural life. These features show that people engaged in gardening and technology even in earlier times.
