Pötnitzer Kirche

Pötnitzer Kirche, Romanesque church in Mildensee, Germany

The Pötnitzer Kirche is a three-nave brick basilica with a 35-meter tower and Romanesque structural elements throughout. The building shapes the village landscape with its distinctive red brick architecture.

Built around 1180, the church gained parish status in 1198 when a Benedictine convent relocated here from the Imperial Abbey in Nienburg. This move established the area as a spiritual center.

The church displays paintings from the former Schlosskirche St Marien, including a Last Supper by Lucas Cranach the Younger. These works reflect artistic connections to the regional religious and artistic world.

Access to this active parish church is usually available during service times and visiting hours. Visitors should expect uneven ancient floors and historic furnishings as part of the authentic experience.

Between 1995 and 1999, the church tower received major restoration work and was fitted with a 600-year-old bell alongside new chimes. This restoration preserved the acoustic heritage of the place.
