Maria Himmelfahrt, Filial church in Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden, Germany.

Maria Himmelfahrt is a filial church in Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden featuring two distinctive wooden towers capped with shingled roofs that frame the mountain landscape. The structure displays careful symmetry along both its length and width, creating a balanced appearance despite its straightforward construction.

Construction started in 1731 and finished in 1732 under the rule of Prince-Abbot Cajetan Anton Notthafft von Weißenstein. It arose during a period of religious shifts in the Berchtesgaden region when new houses of worship became necessary.

The name honors the Assumption of Mary, a feast still celebrated here today. The ceiling frescoes and votive panels in the gallery show how worshippers made their prayers and gratitude visible through religious art.

The path to the church is steep, climbing uphill from St. Sebastian church, so some fitness helps. Located at about 763 meters elevation, it is best reached on foot, and visitors should allow time for the walk.

The ceiling painting includes Latin inscriptions and depicts events tied to the consecration of this house of worship. Such portrayals of founding moments in ceiling artwork are uncommon in this region.
