Plagwitz

Plagwitz is a former industrial district in western Leipzig that developed around the Karl-Heine canal system. The neighborhood connects residential buildings, converted factory structures, and contemporary art spaces through waterways that flow between these different areas.

The quarter emerged during 19th-century industrialization when entrepreneur Karl Heine built factories and constructed waterways for transportation purposes. This infrastructure shaped the area as a major production hub for decades to follow.

Spinnerei, a former cotton mill, now hosts numerous art galleries, studios, and exhibition spaces where contemporary artists work and display their creations. This location has become a hub for the district's creative scene and regularly draws visitors interested in discovering local artistic talent.

Tram lines 14 and 3 connect the district directly to central Leipzig, offering straightforward access to galleries, studios, and industrial heritage sites. For visitors, walking or cycling through the area is recommended to explore art spaces and waterways at your own pace.

The former Kunstkraftwerk power station now operates as an experimental digital art center, displaying large-scale multimedia installations throughout the year. This project transforms industrial architecture into an experiential space where light and digital media completely reshape the factory halls.
