Grenzdenkmal Gompertshausen, Border memorial in Gompertshausen, Germany.
Grenzdenkmal Gompertshausen is a former East German border surveillance tower with an underground command bunker below. The site includes the tower structure with preserved rooms and a system of bunker facilities beneath the ground.
The tower was built in 1983 and staffed by East German soldiers until political changes in November 1989 led to the dismantling of the border installation. During this period, the structure marked the division of Germany at this location.
The memorial preserves a physical piece of German division that visitors can experience directly today. It shows how the border shaped and separated daily life.
Visitors can enter the facility through scheduled guided tours that must be booked in advance and show original preserved equipment. Access to the bunker and tower rooms takes place through tours with knowledgeable explanations.
The cellar area of the tower now serves as a protected habitat for bats, creating a rare combination of historical preservation and nature conservation. This coexistence shows how historical places can also be valuable for wildlife.
