Kloster Engelthal

Kloster Engelthal is an archaeological site of a medieval monastery near Nuremberg with preserved foundation walls and stone structures. The layout of the complex can still be traced, and information panels explain the different areas of the former facility.

The monastery was founded in 1323 to house Dominican nuns and serve as their place of work. It continued operating until 1802, when secularization led to its closure.

Dominican nuns made this place a center of learning where they copied religious texts and shared knowledge with each other. The women who lived here shaped the spiritual life of the region through their dedicated work and prayers.

The grounds are easy to reach via marked pathways from the village center and can be explored at your own pace. Wear sturdy shoes, as the terrain can be uneven in places.

Excavations have uncovered traces of a medieval garden that shows how the nuns grew plants for daily use. These remains offer rare insights into the everyday life and self-sufficiency of the community.
