Air Transport Wing 63, flying wing of the German Air Force
Air Transport Wing 63 was a German Air Force unit based at Hohn Air Base in Schleswig-Holstein, active from 1957 until its disbandment in 2021. The unit operated Transall C-160 aircraft to carry personnel, equipment, and relief supplies, and was also equipped for search and rescue operations.
The wing was founded in 1957 and moved to Hohn Air Base in 1967, where it remained until being disbanded in 2021. It first flew the Nord 2501 before switching to the Transall C-160, and was eventually dissolved as the German Air Force shifted to the Airbus A400M.
The wing represented dependable air transport logistics for Germany. The crews shared a strong sense of teamwork and pride in their worldwide missions serving the air force.
Hohn Air Base sits in the flat landscape of Rendsburg-Eckernförde in northern Germany, surrounded by small towns and open fields. The site is a military installation with restricted access, so public visits are not generally possible without prior authorization.
The wing's emblem featured a bee in flight, chosen to represent the hard work and purpose-driven nature of its crews. After the disbandment, one Transall C-160 was kept on the grounds as a memorial and can be seen from outside the base.
