Haus am Zwinger, Mixed-use building near Zwinger in Dresden, Germany.
Haus am Zwinger is a mixed-use building alongside the Zwinger in Dresden that extends about 175 meters in length and features a glass roof providing extra space on the top floor. It contains apartments, offices, shops, restaurants, and a conference center with a direct connection to the Transport Museum.
Built in 1999 on the site of the former Sophienkirche, this structure replaced a church deliberately demolished in 1963. The building's design subtly references the layout of the vanished house of worship.
Three central staircases hold light and sound art installations by Viennese artist sha that stand out especially after dark. These works shape how people move through and experience the interior spaces on a daily basis.
The building is fully accessible and its location next to the Zwinger makes exploring the surrounding area on foot straightforward. Multiple functions within allow visitors to shop, dine, or visit exhibitions in one visit.
The building's footprint intentionally traces the outline of the demolished Sophienkirche, creating a physical reminder of the lost church beneath. Most visitors pass through without realizing they walk over this hidden memorial.
