Hullerner Stausee, reservoir
Hullerner Stausee is an artificial lake near Haltern am See created by a dam and holding about 11 million cubic meters of water. A circular path runs around the water, offering different views of the lake and the surrounding landscape of fields and small forests.
The lake was built between 1973 and 1985 as part of regional water management to supply the surrounding areas. The dam, standing about 12 meters high, has been kept in good condition to ensure water storage and support local water supply.
The lake takes its name from the nearby village of Hullern, reflecting how water infrastructure and local communities are linked. Today, people use it as a place of rest, where the human-made water surface blends naturally into the landscape and becomes a meeting point for walkers and nature watchers.
The lake is open year-round and easily reached with parking nearby and good public transport connections. The simple, safe paths around the water are suitable for families and easy to navigate on foot or by bike.
The lake is managed by the Gelsenwasser company, which can pump water from the nearby Dortmund-Ems Canal when water levels drop. This connection to other water systems shows how different waterways in the region are linked together.
