Jonsdorfer Felsenstadt

The Jonsdorfer Felsenstadt is a protected natural area in Jonsdorf with distinctive sandstone rock formations and varied geological structures. The site spans about 65 hectares and offers several established trails through its rugged landscape.

This area became a formally protected zone in 2014 and is now part of the Zittau Mountains Nature Park. The protection status reflects the region's importance for safeguarding rare wildlife and natural features.

This rock landscape is home to rare bird species including the Eurasian Eagle Owl and Peregrine Falcon that breed here. These birds shape the rhythm of the protected area and visitors may spot them with patience.

A daytime visit works best since the trails run through forested and rocky terrain with minimal lighting. Sturdy footwear is recommended to navigate the uneven ground safely.

A historic sundial remains carved or painted on the rock wall of the former Schwarzes Loch quarry at the site's base. This relic marks the area's past as an industrial zone before it became a nature reserve.
