Castra of Walldürn, Roman military fort in Walldürn, Germany
The Castra of Walldürn was a rectangular Roman military fort with barracks, administrative buildings, and bath facilities positioned on a flat elevation overlooking the surrounding countryside. The foundation walls of the bath complex remain visible today in a mowed field.
The fort was built as a strategic military post along the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes frontier and served to protect the border. It was abandoned between 259 and 260 CE when Roman frontier defenses collapsed.
The bath complex reveals how Roman soldiers lived through visible walls and an inscription naming the centurion who oversaw construction. These remains tell the story of daily life and duties for the men stationed here.
The remains can be reached on foot via an unpaved road or from the L577 highway, where parking is available nearby. You can visit anytime during the year since the foundations sit in an open field accessible without restrictions.
Archaeological finds show that garden orache was grown at this location, a plant introduced by the Romans. This discovery provides clues to how soldiers supplemented their diet and which crop plants were cultivated in this region.
