Liebfrauenkirche

The Liebfrauenkirche is a Catholic church building in Bautzen located at Kirchplatz that features a compact footprint and a north-facing tower. The structure combines architectural elements from different periods through multiple rebuilding campaigns over the centuries.

The building is first documented in 1293 and had to be rebuilt after fires in the 17th century. Its current form emerged from extensive renovations during the second half of the 19th century.

The church serves the local Catholic community and contains stained-glass windows with religious imagery visible to visitors. This interior decoration reflects the devotion to the Virgin Mary for whom the building is named.

The building sits centrally in the city core and is walkable from the main square. Visitors should check opening times beforehand since it remains an active place of worship.

From 1318 to 1865, the church grounds served as a cemetery located outside the medieval city walls. This long-closed burial site shows how Bautzen grew and expanded around this religious center.
