Natureum Niederelbe, Natural history theme park in Belum, Germany
Natureum Niederelbe is a nature and discovery park in Belum, in northwestern Germany, set across meadows and wetlands near the mouth of the Elbe river. Outdoor displays, marked walking routes, and observation stations guide visitors through different habitats, including salt marshes, reed beds, and open water areas.
The park was established in the early 2010s to support habitat protection and environmental education in the Elbe estuary region. Its main building, the Küstenwelle, opened in 2014 and now holds scientific collections related to the natural and human history of the Lower Elbe.
The name refers to the Lower Elbe region, whose tides and seasonal floods have long shaped life along the riverbanks. Walking through the park, visitors can see how the land is still managed in ways that follow those natural rhythms, from grazed meadows to flooded hollows.
Most paths are paved and accessible for wheelchairs or strollers, so visitors with limited mobility can explore a good part of the park without difficulty. A cafe and a museum shop are located near the entrance, and free parking is available, with charging points for electric bikes.
Each autumn, tens of thousands of wild geese gather in the wetlands around the park before continuing their migration, and the sky fills with their formations. Visitors who come at that time of year can also spot rare wading birds like ruffs and snipes along the shallow water edges.
