Natureum Niederelbe, Natural history theme park in Belum, Germany
Natureum Niederelbe is a natural history park spread across parkland in marshland territory with outdoor displays, walking routes, and learning stations set among meadows and wetlands. Most paths wind through open landscape where visitors encounter habitats of bird species and water plants from various viewpoints.
The site was created in the early 2010s in response to growing interest in habitat protection and environmental education in this region. The entrance building Kustenwelle opened in 2014 and now houses scientific collections that tell the story of the Lower Elbe.
The name refers to the Lower Elbe river region, which shapes the landscape and natural rhythms visitors encounter here. Throughout the park, displays explain how local communities historically lived alongside seasonal flooding and changing water levels.
The park is easy to reach on foot and many routes are wheelchair-accessible, with most paths well-paved for comfortable walking. A cafe and museum shop sit near the entrance, and there is ample free parking plus charging stations for electric bikes for visitors arriving by bicycle.
Observation stations along the routes offer seasonal moments of interest, especially during autumn migration when tens of thousands of wild geese fill the skies. These special spots allow visitors to watch rare bird species like ruffs and snipes that are otherwise hard to spot in most places.
